Here in Michigan the 15th of Novemberis a tradition, one that probably should be observed across the land, it really is a God given right. It would give people an appreciation of what you have, fresh meat, a cold blast of air, and a story you can tell repeatedly. A crossroad is where we are at: should we be a participant or not? If you agree
with me it will take you into the unknown, it will be chilly, it will be mysterious, you can go it alone or take a friend into the very precarious areas, it could be very exciting! There is discussion in the public forum whether people should have the right: there are people too busy with life to learn the importance of it, with many of the public only enjoying plant-based diets there doesn’t seem to be an appetite or even a need for them to take on the challenge. I personally look at this as a right of passage, a personal responsibility, that I won’t pawn off to someone else for my need’s sake. Although there are aspects of it all that do not appeal to me, I hope to get over it, man up as it may demand, and get it done. Reflecting on the past, something everyone enjoys doing by the watercooler at work or even to strangers if they will act mildly interested, there are times that the consideration of the moments between dawn and dusk when I have it targeted in that I just can’t do it. Afterall, there are so many other things in life that can be done: hiking, read a book, go bowling, play dominoes, watch a ball game, clean out a closet (now that is exciting), finishing some remodel project, or find that missing sock. As a boy only fifteen years old, with my parent’s encouragement I reached into my inner self and tried to sit in the face of the cold blast and dig into the moment. I discovered there were things growing where it just wasn’t natural, that lights sometimes flicker, that noises of the unknown can be unsettling I knew that this could become something that I could appreciate in time. The only thing that bothered me was the temperature, not the opening morning, not the noise but the tingling of my fingers, the only remedy was to put my hands in the warm bowl of water used to wash out the cavity. Whatever your thoughts are I trust you would keep an open mind to those who chose to participate. As for me, I plan on going deer hunting first thing in the morning and then participate in The National Clean Out the Fridge Day November 15th, when I get home!
